Screen Placement – positioning is paramount

Part I

When a client uses an LED screen, chances are good some advertising or sponsorship logos will be displayed during an event. The screen can do an amazing job at getting your message across. But without thought to location, and optimum viewing, some of the best messages will go unseen.

The problem is common to any kind of media display . The whole purpose of visual support is to let an audience experience an entire image if possible. Surroundings and venue play crucial roles in achieving that goal, but with a little effort and planning, a properly-placed screen can ensure the entire surface area is visible.

Advertisers spend thousands of dollars to sponsor events, and expect their message to be seen. The easy way to make sponsors happy is to ensure people, trees, or other obstacles are not blocking the screen. It’s all about maximum impact for your advertisers and your audience.

Here are examples of screen placement with challenging consequences.

Screen Placement Challenges

Note the people walking directly in front of the screens in both pictures above, obstructing portions of the display. An observer further away would miss information in the lower half of the screen, and only notice the top portion.

Both pictures were taken at an average person’s height level of around 1.7m (5 ft. 10 in.). They were also taken during a slow period. Imagine the blockage of the information with a crowd walking by when attendance increased ! Lower screen messaging would be missed.

Remember, size doesn’t matter…a bigger screen doesn’t guarantee your message will be seen. And if placement is incorrect, the fact the screen is of high quality gets lost in the crowd…literally. Raising the screen is an easy quick fix. All it takes is a little planning.

We can handle any scenario…if height is an issue, we’ll make it work.

When you plan to rent a screen, think about location, placement and elevation. Achieve maximum impact for your dollar. And remember –we’re here to help make those decisions easy.

The sum of all delays – IMAG Video Latency

Part I

Latency in Live Video Production is important to understand, as the effects of being unaware will lead to challenges and dissapointment.

How many times have you seen the effect where the persons voice is not in sync with the lips on the screen?   There is nothing more distracting in a show than to watch a singer on the large screen where this synchronization is missing.

In the analog days latency was never an issue.  With the move towards digital production, latency has become a reality and something that must be factored into the equation when doing IMAG.

The argument has been presented on many discussion boards that latency of up to 6 frames in the NTSC world is acceptable.  Respectfully, that’s too long in my opinion.  I try to minimize the amount of latency in our live productions to fewer than 4 frames.

Latency occurs in all installations and this includes analog and digital productions.  However, in the Analog world the latency is so minimal it’s not even considered a challenge.  To circumvent any problems of live video production image / audio syncing,  ColossoVision has developed a latency report for all of our live video productions.  This  is now a standard part of our production when selecting equipment for your event.

Latency occurs when there is a short delay between the audio signal and video due to anolog to digital conversions, format conversions, buffering, digital signal processing, and other electronic processes.   This latency can be minimized and controlled by selecting the right equipment and designing a system which takes into account each components specifications.

Latency is also cumulative.  Every piece of equipment that undergoes signal conversion or processing has some delay.  Every component in the chain adds latency, even the camera. The question is, to what degree can it be controlled.  How much latency are you, or your client willing to tolerate.   From my experience, many clients won’t tolerate a high degree of delay.

Other items in the live production chain which can add to the Latency are

  • Scalers
  • Media Servers
  • Digital Distribution Amps  ( VGA,DVI, and others )
  • Format Convertors
  • Wireless equipment

Although some of the above items may have minimal delays for the video signal,  the total delay of all of the components is what you must consider and be aware of.

Imagine 10k half marathon and walk Niverville Manitoba

Imagine 10k Half Marathon and Walk
Niverville Manitoba
September 24th  2011  9:00am

The Imagine Run is more than a half marathon and walk.  “Imagine is a group of caring individuals who are committed to raising public awareness & erasing the Stigma surrounding Mental Health Issues & Suicide.”

Although our family at ColossoVision considers this a privilege to be a sponsor, we truly wish there was no need for such a run.   Yet, the realities of suicide where teens and youth are involved is supported by some very scary statistics.  According to the Canadian Childrens Rights Council, ” Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people after motor vehicle accidents”

When i was a teen I remember arriving for morning classes to find out one of the students at our high school attempted suicide.  Shock and disbelief was what a lot of us felt.  How can someone attempt such a final act?  Especially when this person was popular, in sports, came from a very stable family, and appeared to have everything they wanted.  In asking teachers if they knew why ,  we were told to not ask  as they would not discuss it.   Maybe we need to discuss this more! Bringing awareness to youth and teens that they are not alone and there are people who are prepared to listen and help.

We are a family first and business second.  Our family wishes to lend our support to Mona and Jeff in helping get the message out.

ColossoVision Mobile and Modular Screen Installations – Safety Part I

With the recent stage collapses, ColossoVision has seen an increased awareness by event planners, producers and clients regarding safety.   In the last week we have fielded many inquiries regarding the safety of our screens, structures and installations.   The concerns are justified and we understand the need to ask.

In response to some of the concerns, I provide the following information for both our mobile and modular LED systems.  Before I continue,  I would like to mention the greater majority  of the events, producers, suppliers, volunteers, who are associated with the outdoor events where staging, rigging, screens, sound , lighting is concerned, take safety very seriously.  Safety is paramount for us as it is with the many companies we’ve had the privilege of working with.    Therefore this piece is not written with any intent other than to answer questions we have been asked.

Mobile Screens:

All of our mobile screens have been manufactured by Barco ,  a leader in LED screen manufacturing and engineering.   When Barco designed the Barco B10, safety was one of the key features along with quality.

Should adverse weather conditions develop , our mobile screens can be lowered from its trim height within 30seconds to minimize the dangers of high winds.   This is a very important safety feature for reducing the probability of problems.

I will also note that Barco is not the only manufacturer of mobiles which stands firm on safety .

So, how does one know if the mobile is safe?  Here are a few key items to ask for

  • Does your supplier have approved specifications from an engineer for their mobile?
  • Is the mobile certified?
  • Does the mobile have proper outriggers or stabilizers?
  • Ask your supplier if they have full coverage / insurance on the mobile.  Most insurance companies want to know what they’re insuring.
  • Does your supplier have proper workers insurance in place? Not the same as equipment or liability insurance.
  • Ask for references and don’t be afraid to call them.

Temporary Structures:

Trussing and scaffolding that is engaged in the rigging of  our screens is manufactured  by industry leaders who have engineering specs on all of their components.   Whether we buy the materials or rent them,  all of the structural components must meet engineering specs.

Having this information available to ColossoVision is very important as we in turn have all of our structures built with truss, scaffold or other materials, approved by an independent outside engineer.

Our structures as approved for building includes considerations for-

  • Wind pressure rating of 0.5kpa ( equivalent to 100km/hr gusts ) with a factor of 1.25 — This rating can be increased to comply with local or regional codes as required.    But this is our minimum.
  • Load distribution
  • Quality of materials used for building the trusses or scaffolds
  • Counter weights and types where needed
  • Support wires if required
  • Support or rigging crew for installation and dismantling.

I would like to take a moment to mention there are no judgments made or directed at anyone, company, or event in this writing, and I’m hoping we can all learn from the tragedies that took place.

Calgary – 4th annual Spaghetti Western Festival

If you’re in the Calgary area on August 20th  ,  Don’t miss the  4th annual Spaghetti Western Festival located at Calgary’s Olympic Plaza.    ColossoVision is  thrilled to be back as the screen sponsor after missing 2010 due to previous commitments.  But,  Matt Masters, the head noodle of the festival,  kept the door open for ColossoVision in 2011, and we’re pleased to be back along with many of the other fine sponsors of this event.    Supporting the arts and what Matt Masters provides as a fun filled day for  Calgarians  is important for us at ColossoVision.

The Spaghetti Western Festival is a one day event celebrating new directions in Country and Western music. Just as the Spaghetti Western films of the 1960′s took western film in new directions, the Spaghetti Western Festival will push boundaries by featuring exciting contemporary country and western music.

ColossoVisions mobile screen shines at golf tournaments

ColossoVision’s mobile screen and the Tricaster HD850 proved to be a valuable  resource at two events last week at the Mill Woods Golf Course in Edmonton.  Two side by side events,  the Ladies invitational tournament  and Men’s Pro-am Invitational engaged ColossoVisions technologies to display sponsor advertising,  results, and other content to enhance the spectators and players tournament experience.

“ The event itself went very well and all of the guests seemed quite impressed with the display. While I received many thanks for the graphics and switching, the quality of the display was really the key.

My personal appreciation goes to Brent Wanstall and Chris Soltesz for setting everything up, including lugging the Tricaster onto the 12’ scaffolding set up for us.

 ( organizers name withheld )“

I would like to thank Mill Woods Golf Course for inviting ColossoVision back for our second year at what was a  successful tournament .

ColossoVision live event closed captioning

Closed Captioning ColossoVision

ColossoVision is pleased to introduce “real time” live event closed captioning.

According to the Canadian Hearing Society’s survey, a large segment of the Canadian population has hearing challenges including a large number of youths and young adults.  And even if your audience’s hearing is not challenged, there may be other factors or distractions that keep them from getting audio focused messaging.

Real time closed captioning services displays text on a television or video screen, acting as a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs.  This proves invaluable for sports, newscasts, concerts and many other special events that utilize both audio and video at their venue.

Thousands of watts of sound may mean that the sound is loud at the venue but it does not guarantee that it will be clear, or that your audience will have the physical capacity to take it in.  Furthermore, you cannot always rely on your speaker system to provide equal opportunity for crystal clear sound to all corners of your venue.

ColossoVisions “real time” live event closed captioning service enhances your presentation allowing everyone regardless of handicap, be it physical or situational, the best chance at receiving your message.

Real time accuracy is an amazing 98%!   When our team takes on a new show, it’s our research team that first goes to work and gathers core information about the programming we will do.   For example, if it’s a sports program, then specifics of that sport, active players, past players and even future prospects all need to be included.

Once the research team gathers this information, our crew starts reviewing the information, entering the key words into their dictionaries and testing each new entry to ensure accuracy.

By the time your event begins, you can rest assured that this service, along with the hard work put in behind the scenes by ColossoVision, will give everyone at your event the chance to know exactly what’s happening.

ColossoVision goes HD 1080p

Tricaster 850 and Controller

In 2011, ColossoVision flipped the switch to high definition 1080p for all of its “ live video productions “ due to the dynamic capabilities of the Tricaster TCXD 850.  Does this mean you’ll need a high definition screen to take advantage of the high definition production? Not at all!   ColossoVision has the necessary technology and processors to take care of converting the signal if needed! In fact the  majority of the LED screens in the rental market do not provide true HD display capability.  There is a huge difference between high resolution and Hi Definition.   We’ll leave that topic for another time as  some LED rental houses claim their screens have the capability of displaying ” true ” HD quality.   Simply put for now, to obtain a true HD display with an LED screen, a one to one pixel mapping is a must.

Since the TriCaster supports simultaneous output of both SD (Standard Definition) and HD (High Definition) video, our screens are not affected by what takes place on the production end. With this in mind, ColossoVision opted to provide the best possible “Live Production” quality product for our clients events. For post production purposes , this translates into a high quality recording available for archival purposes, web streaming, promotional , and many other uses.

Is the decision to go HD going to cost our clients more? No! ColossoVision believes in providing added value that won’t cost you more.

DVI Parrot Display Emulator

I’m sure most technicians have experienced the challenges of hooking up external display devices to laptops, media servers, projectors, plasma / LCD screens, scalars, matrix switchers, and other devices which have video cards. You know are certain beyond doubt the output of your video source works. Yet, the display isn’t recognized by the video card. This is not uncommon and becomes very frustrating especially when timelines and pressures mount just before a show.

DVI Parrot Display Emulator ColossoVision

So why does this happen?   Simply put,  the computer graphics card must be able to see the device that it is hooked up to. Unless there is communication between the two devices the display will not engage.

The solution for ColossoVision was purchasing DVI Parrot EDID ( Extended Display Identification Data ) emulators designed by Carallon. Parrots are now a part of our standard component/accessories for all of our LED display rentals. They are simple to use and blessing to have at a show. One of the key features we like is the “Trainer Software” which can be used on Macs and Windows operating systems. A totally user friendly and configureable EDID management tool. “The Trainer software allows the capture, editing, and saving of EDID data for multiple Parrots, making it ideal for systems with numerous graphics cards connected to various DVI devices. The custom settings, once captured, can be permanently saved, e-mailed as attachments, etc. The Parrot Trainer Software allows adjustment of all EDID settings, including resolution, video timing, etc.”

The best part of going to a venue / show is telling our clients we’re also bringing some trainable parrots with us.

Ontario ESA Event Electrical Guidelines

Ontario’s Electric Safety Authority has guidelines which ” deals with the installation of electrical equipment in the entertainment industry utilizing any source of power including generator sets. This includes events of a temporary nature held indoors, outdoors, in tents, such as film, television, live performance and other events.”

It is very important for event planners in Ontario to be aware of these guidelines as failure to comply with them could shut down that portion of your show . If video support is a vital part of your event please follow the link below for more information.

Film, Television, Live Performance and Live Event Electrical Guidelines

At a recent event in Collingwood, ColossoVision’s mobiles were presented with passing grades by the ESA inspector for complying with all safety codes and requirements.

When renting equipment which originates from out of province, or country, your supplier will require the same inspection to ensure their generator / electrical system  is up to standards. In the event the electrical / generator is not up to ESA standards, your supplier will be required to make the appropriate repairs or corrections.

As a part of our service, ColossoVision will call ESA and make arrangements in advance ensuring the inspection takes place before your event begins.

ColossoVision believes safety is paramount and fully supports the ESA guidelines.

ColossoVision dedicated to LED screens and Video Production

While some “ full meal deal “  companies add LED screens to their inventory , Colossovision’s diversification and growth is focused within the Video Industry.  With no disrespect, when companies offer too wide an array of products ranging from video, lighting, sound, staging, multi-media, video production, and on… and on.. for resources,  you as a client may experience a diluted offering of skills in most disciplines.

A one-stop shop isn’t always the best solution in my opinion in securing product and resources.   Many one-stop shops are spread thin in support, thereby sacrificing quality for the sake of providing an expanded inventory.   In my opinion, companies that offer a far too wide range of services tend to have generalists in some disciplines while providing experts in one or two areas.

Our goal at Colossovision is to stay within the LED screen and Video Production portfolio to ensure our clients receive the best possible results from experts within this industry.   All of our technical and creative personnel have dedicated their life to enhance their knowledge, talents, and engagement in video and multimedia.    The benefit as a client, which you’ll experience first hand, is our inventory is new, up to date, well maintained, and meets or surpasses your most demanding technical needs in the area of LED screens and Video Production.

When we invest our resources in securing the best possible LED and Video production products, commit to training, education, and large inventory of parts, we do so for you.

The most overlooked investment by many companies is inventory of spare parts.  Why?   In the unlikely event something goes wrong with the equipment, and it may, ColossoVision has the inventory on site to provide an immediate solution.

ColossoVision welcomes the opportunity to demonstrate why we believe our service and support is superior as a dedicated LED screen and Video Production provider.

All of us at ColossoVision are proud to have seen our brand become a recognized trademark where our clients are guaranteed they are teaming up with a trustworthy and experienced supplier. Our team and quality products have inspired positive reviews nationwide.

Please visit our portfolio page and we’ll be very happy to send you more information.
