How Sweet it Was! Calgary 2012 Sweet City Celebrations.

It was an eclectic night of performances displaying the vast diversity of culture that has earned Calgary the “ Cultural Capital of the World “ . Calgary 2012’s Sweet City Celebrations held at the BMO Center at Stampede Park was the site for this incredible event. Three stages were busy with Circus Artists, Living Statues, Bollywood Dancers, Luchadors, DJ’s , Roughneck Dancers, and well over a 150 performers. The highlight of the evening was the performance by the Stampeders.   Hats off to a wonderful job by the Calgary 2012 committee.

ColossoVision provided Three video Walls for this event.

  • Main back line screen – ST18 VisuaLED
  • Creative circular suspended screen – ST18 VisuaLED
  • Front of House fill – Barco Dlite
  • Tricaster HD850

ColossoVision provided the screens, but PK Sounds Paul Magnuson created the eye candy / VJ visuals which were stunning!

One final comment! I would like to thank the committee for locating the food truck next to our video world! This made the dash to dine a very nice experience.

Media Assets Part I – No Excuse

Media assets are probably the most overlooked and undervalued items when it comes to planning and delivering content at shows and events.

Let me put that another way. Event organizers spend a huge chunk of their event budget on things like big-screens and cameras to capture the action, multi-media and production equipment, staff and resources…yet for some reason, they treat the content that needs to be shown on the screens as an afterthought.

Imagine a team competing in Nascar that spends millions on the car and treats the driver as an afterthought. It sounds ridiculous, yet that is the approach unprepared event organizers take when they wait until the absolute last-minute to submit content. Imagine the Nascar team grabs some dude that can’t drive stick, or that isn’t used to driving on the left, or has no hands…

Ridiculous? Well I can tell you first-hand how often materials that production crews don’t see until the last minute have unusable content: corrupted files, out of sequence files, improper video format… even blank or unreadable disks and USB’s!

When digital assets are created with the intent on being used on someone else’s equipment, which is the case in almost every event, they must be checked for operational integrity. If the file is corrupted, won’t play on the suppliers media server, DVD player or computer, you need to know about it long before the morning of the event. Time must be put aside for testing all assets and for any adjustments or corrections that must be made.

At a recent show in February the production crew was downloading files from advertisers, sponsors and the marketing companies two hours before the screens went live!  All of it done using a USB connection on-site.  The excuse given was that the material was “hot off the press” and that the team had worked late into the night to ensure the materials even made it at all.

Ha. The real reason was simple: The event manager screwed up.

Fortunately for her, it wasn’t their first rodeo.

Over the years not much has changed. Back in the 80′s it was a guy running into the production trailer with a binder full of slides demanding that they all get loaded into the carrousel 30 minutes before the show…and you better pray to God you got them in the right order and right-side-up.  The worst part is that the production crew is where the blame lands regardless of the fact that it is rarely their fault.

As event managers it is important to ensure that you do not put unnecessary strain or stress on your crew. Your memorandum should include mutually agreed upon submission deadlines well before the event that everyone can adhere to and that considers what everyone needs to do the best job possible.

I like to make two deadlines; the real one and the fake, earlier one I tell everybody because I know damn well that everybody’s favorite thing to do is procrastinate. You should see my laundry hamper…

You also need to ensure you send anyone contributing assets a set of format instructions that have been given to you by the provider of the production equipment to ensure you are getting the best possible combination of hardware and content.

I mean, in today’s digital age there really is no excuse. Most assets can now be sent via FTP, Yousendit, Dropbox, and other data transfer methods.

I am not saying last-minute edits and additions won’t happen…but I am saying that it’s in everybody’s best interest to avoid them.

Burton Canadian Open – Winsport and Uptown 17 in Calgary

The 2012 Burton Canadian Open was a success!

Spring like weather, excellent snow conditions, and world class snowboarders brought huge crowds to Canada Olympic Park for the 2012 Burton Canadian Open. Spectators at COP weren’t the only ones watching this year! In 2012 ColossoVision was presented with a challenge of expanding the event from WinSport to Uptown 17th which is located in downtown Calgary. We accepted the challenge and we delivered.

Over the course of the two day event, those who live and work in this lovely cosmopolitan community came down to Tomkins park where we installed one of our Barco modular LED screens.  During the races, spectators gathered and took in the event while having lunch, shopping, or just enjoying the warm weather. In between races we provided other entertainment which included snow boarding videos supplied by Burton. Other items on the screen included advertising and promotions for the Uptown 17 BRZ members and the sponsors of the Burton Canadian Open.

ColossoVision is proud to be a part of Burtons annual Canadian Open for the last four years as a sponsor and supplier of LED screens and content delivery.

IGSA NORAM 2011 Winsport Canada Cup is a Success!

IGSA NORAM Winsport Canada Cup 2011

IGSA NORAM Winsport Canada Cup 2011

The IGSA NORAM Winsport Canada Cup lived up to all expectations and more on this Labor Day long weekend.  On opening day the weather cooperated, thousands of spectators attended, and even more joined in for the webcast.

This was a world class event at a world class track.  Longboard competitors from all over North America, Europe, Australia, and South America converged at Winsport for three days of incredible racing.  Full credit goes to Winsport, IGSA, sponsors, and all of the volunteers who helped make this event a success.

The Winsport track is considered “technical”  by racers which normally means speeds are lower to enable negotiating the seven turns on the course.  However, someone forgot to tell the racers the track was technical as they hit the turns at very high speeds.  Some even achieved speeds of over 100km/hr crossing the finish line.

ColossoVision, as a sponsor, was pleased to provide screens, video production and webcasting support.  Winsports 1.5km course meant a lot of corners to cover with long stretches in between.  We were fortunate to have had the experience from 2009 to draw on, and therefore we added additional technologies to enhance the visual experience for everyone.

Here’s what we provided in 2011.

  • 10 km – video cables
  • 3 – microwave video systems
  • 4 – robotic cameras – remote controlled
  • 4 – hard cameras
  • 1 – hand held camera
  • 1 – Barco B10 mobile screen
  • 1 – VisuaLED 11ft x 21ft screen
  • 1 – Network feed over a 50Mbps bandwidth for streaming
  • 1 – Replay system
  • 1 – Live scoring and results integration
  • 1 – Digital signal distribution for riders lounge and other locations
  • 1 – Integration of live and webcast sound with KISS Pro Audio

david dean announcer igsa winsport canada cup calgaryDuring the live webcast, viewers had the opportunity ask questions and make comments on IGSA’s twitter and the ColossoCasting chat room.  Many of the questions kept our Announcer, David Dean , very busy and juggling duties while providing live play by play of the race.  Great work David!

The webcast was the first step in sharing the experience of the NORAM Winsport Canada Cup from Calgary with the longboarding community.  ColossoVision will be releasing the final produced product in November of this year.

Imagine 10k half marathon and walk Niverville Manitoba

Imagine 10k Half Marathon and Walk
Niverville Manitoba
September 24th  2011  9:00am

The Imagine Run is more than a half marathon and walk.  “Imagine is a group of caring individuals who are committed to raising public awareness & erasing the Stigma surrounding Mental Health Issues & Suicide.”

Although our family at ColossoVision considers this a privilege to be a sponsor, we truly wish there was no need for such a run.   Yet, the realities of suicide where teens and youth are involved is supported by some very scary statistics.  According to the Canadian Childrens Rights Council, ” Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people after motor vehicle accidents”

When i was a teen I remember arriving for morning classes to find out one of the students at our high school attempted suicide.  Shock and disbelief was what a lot of us felt.  How can someone attempt such a final act?  Especially when this person was popular, in sports, came from a very stable family, and appeared to have everything they wanted.  In asking teachers if they knew why ,  we were told to not ask  as they would not discuss it.   Maybe we need to discuss this more! Bringing awareness to youth and teens that they are not alone and there are people who are prepared to listen and help.

We are a family first and business second.  Our family wishes to lend our support to Mona and Jeff in helping get the message out.

IGSA NORAM Longboard Series Calgary

The IGSA, Gravity of Sports Festival, World Cup Series returns to Calgary on September 2nd at Winsport.

ColossoVision was part of the inaugural run in 2009 which saw racers from all over North America, with some from destinations as far as Europe and Australia, race on Winsports ” world class ” track. The comments from the racers were extremely positive as were the spectators.

As Winsports website states , ” Some of the fastest longboard riders in the world will be competing here at COP for the WinSport Canada Cup which is the only Canadian stop on the World Cup Series. Plus, admission is free! “

As a sponsor / supplier ColossoVision will be engaging large LED screens on site to display live coverage of the event.

Plans are in the works to stream the event live! In 2009 over 30,000 viewers world wide watched the excitement.

Winsports course is highly technical for a North American track, just like some of the roads in Europe.
Calgary! This event is right in your back yard.  A world class event with speed, spills, thrills, and more.

Calgary – 4th annual Spaghetti Western Festival

If you’re in the Calgary area on August 20th  ,  Don’t miss the  4th annual Spaghetti Western Festival located at Calgary’s Olympic Plaza.    ColossoVision is  thrilled to be back as the screen sponsor after missing 2010 due to previous commitments.  But,  Matt Masters, the head noodle of the festival,  kept the door open for ColossoVision in 2011, and we’re pleased to be back along with many of the other fine sponsors of this event.    Supporting the arts and what Matt Masters provides as a fun filled day for  Calgarians  is important for us at ColossoVision.

The Spaghetti Western Festival is a one day event celebrating new directions in Country and Western music. Just as the Spaghetti Western films of the 1960′s took western film in new directions, the Spaghetti Western Festival will push boundaries by featuring exciting contemporary country and western music.

ColossoVisions mobile screen shines at golf tournaments

ColossoVision’s mobile screen and the Tricaster HD850 proved to be a valuable  resource at two events last week at the Mill Woods Golf Course in Edmonton.  Two side by side events,  the Ladies invitational tournament  and Men’s Pro-am Invitational engaged ColossoVisions technologies to display sponsor advertising,  results, and other content to enhance the spectators and players tournament experience.

“ The event itself went very well and all of the guests seemed quite impressed with the display. While I received many thanks for the graphics and switching, the quality of the display was really the key.

My personal appreciation goes to Brent Wanstall and Chris Soltesz for setting everything up, including lugging the Tricaster onto the 12’ scaffolding set up for us.

 ( organizers name withheld )“

I would like to thank Mill Woods Golf Course for inviting ColossoVision back for our second year at what was a  successful tournament .
