Our family would like to thank all of the visitors at our set for spending some time with us and sharing stories.

We would both like to thank the following people who have made this years event such a success.

Success to us is hearing back from the  visitors who in some way we have touched their lives. Now we turn our attention to Christmas with our families. A quote which I’d like to share with you comes from Burton Hills.

“The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree, the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.”

At this time of year there are many families that are separated for one reason or another. Military families with loved ones serving over in other countries, a member of a family who cannot make it home, Seniors who are by themselves, and many more similar situations. If you know of someone who may spend this Christmas alone, please try to find a way to make their Christmas special. A simple call, email,  or maybe a visit.

Another  Thank you goes to my wonderful partner in life, Vicki Dupuis.  She has been with me from the first visit 5 years ago to the last one tonight.  I couldn’t have done this without her.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and hope the spirit of the season carries on throughout 2012.

Merry Christmas

The sum of all delays – IMAG Video Latency

Part I

Latency in Live Video Production is important to understand, as the effects of being unaware will lead to challenges and dissapointment.

How many times have you seen the effect where the persons voice is not in sync with the lips on the screen?   There is nothing more distracting in a show than to watch a singer on the large screen where this synchronization is missing.

In the analog days latency was never an issue.  With the move towards digital production, latency has become a reality and something that must be factored into the equation when doing IMAG.

The argument has been presented on many discussion boards that latency of up to 6 frames in the NTSC world is acceptable.  Respectfully, that’s too long in my opinion.  I try to minimize the amount of latency in our live productions to fewer than 4 frames.

Latency occurs in all installations and this includes analog and digital productions.  However, in the Analog world the latency is so minimal it’s not even considered a challenge.  To circumvent any problems of live video production image / audio syncing,  ColossoVision has developed a latency report for all of our live video productions.  This  is now a standard part of our production when selecting equipment for your event.

Latency occurs when there is a short delay between the audio signal and video due to anolog to digital conversions, format conversions, buffering, digital signal processing, and other electronic processes.   This latency can be minimized and controlled by selecting the right equipment and designing a system which takes into account each components specifications.

Latency is also cumulative.  Every piece of equipment that undergoes signal conversion or processing has some delay.  Every component in the chain adds latency, even the camera. The question is, to what degree can it be controlled.  How much latency are you, or your client willing to tolerate.   From my experience, many clients won’t tolerate a high degree of delay.

Other items in the live production chain which can add to the Latency are

  • Scalers
  • Media Servers
  • Digital Distribution Amps  ( VGA,DVI, and others )
  • Format Convertors
  • Wireless equipment

Although some of the above items may have minimal delays for the video signal,  the total delay of all of the components is what you must consider and be aware of.

DVI Parrot Display Emulator

I’m sure most technicians have experienced the challenges of hooking up external display devices to laptops, media servers, projectors, plasma / LCD screens, scalars, matrix switchers, and other devices which have video cards. You know are certain beyond doubt the output of your video source works. Yet, the display isn’t recognized by the video card. This is not uncommon and becomes very frustrating especially when timelines and pressures mount just before a show.

DVI Parrot Display Emulator ColossoVision

So why does this happen?   Simply put,  the computer graphics card must be able to see the device that it is hooked up to. Unless there is communication between the two devices the display will not engage.

The solution for ColossoVision was purchasing DVI Parrot EDID ( Extended Display Identification Data ) emulators designed by Carallon. Parrots are now a part of our standard component/accessories for all of our LED display rentals. They are simple to use and blessing to have at a show. One of the key features we like is the “Trainer Software” which can be used on Macs and Windows operating systems. A totally user friendly and configureable EDID management tool. “The Trainer software allows the capture, editing, and saving of EDID data for multiple Parrots, making it ideal for systems with numerous graphics cards connected to various DVI devices. The custom settings, once captured, can be permanently saved, e-mailed as attachments, etc. The Parrot Trainer Software allows adjustment of all EDID settings, including resolution, video timing, etc.”

The best part of going to a venue / show is telling our clients we’re also bringing some trainable parrots with us.

ColossoVision dedicated to LED screens and Video Production

While some “ full meal deal “  companies add LED screens to their inventory , Colossovision’s diversification and growth is focused within the Video Industry.  With no disrespect, when companies offer too wide an array of products ranging from video, lighting, sound, staging, multi-media, video production, and on… and on.. for resources,  you as a client may experience a diluted offering of skills in most disciplines.

A one-stop shop isn’t always the best solution in my opinion in securing product and resources.   Many one-stop shops are spread thin in support, thereby sacrificing quality for the sake of providing an expanded inventory.   In my opinion, companies that offer a far too wide range of services tend to have generalists in some disciplines while providing experts in one or two areas.

Our goal at Colossovision is to stay within the LED screen and Video Production portfolio to ensure our clients receive the best possible results from experts within this industry.   All of our technical and creative personnel have dedicated their life to enhance their knowledge, talents, and engagement in video and multimedia.    The benefit as a client, which you’ll experience first hand, is our inventory is new, up to date, well maintained, and meets or surpasses your most demanding technical needs in the area of LED screens and Video Production.

When we invest our resources in securing the best possible LED and Video production products, commit to training, education, and large inventory of parts, we do so for you.

The most overlooked investment by many companies is inventory of spare parts.  Why?   In the unlikely event something goes wrong with the equipment, and it may, ColossoVision has the inventory on site to provide an immediate solution.

ColossoVision welcomes the opportunity to demonstrate why we believe our service and support is superior as a dedicated LED screen and Video Production provider.

All of us at ColossoVision are proud to have seen our brand become a recognized trademark where our clients are guaranteed they are teaming up with a trustworthy and experienced supplier. Our team and quality products have inspired positive reviews nationwide.
